Tony Naylor Bursary IFSCC Congress

Tony Naylor Bursary IFSCC Congress

The fund has been set up to assist SCS members who are students, consultants, from small companies, or from academia, who have had abstracts accepted for a platform or poster presentation at an IFSCC Congress. The SCS may provide financial assistance to help individuals attend a future Congress, subject to the selection criteria being met.

Abstracts need to be submitted via the IFSCC Congress website each year and Bursary applications are made once an abstract has been submitted. There is no need to wait for acceptance of the abstract before applying but the Bursary will only be considered once acceptance has been confirmed.

The Tony Naylor Bursary Fund Committee will decide who will receive funding to attend the Congress and their decision will be final. The author receiving funding must be the first author and must be the person who will be present to make the podium or poster presentation. The Bursary Fund is limited to a maximum of three awards to the same author within a 7 year period.

Your next opportunity to apply for the Tony Naylor Bursary is for the IFSCC 2026 Congress in Adelaide, Australia – please click this link to download the Tony Naylor Memorial Bursary Entry 2025-26 application form.

Exploring Flaxseed Mucilage’s Potential in Cosmetic Applications
This study investigated the use of unrefined flaxseed mucilage as a sustainable cosmetic ingredient, which can be derived from agricultural and food by-products. Physical characterisation of the extracted mucilage showed shear-thinning and thixotropic behaviour comparable to other gums, but with lower viscosity and rigidity. When formulated into emulsions and gels, flaxseed mucilage enhanced texture, particularly at higher concentrations or when combined with sodium hyaluronate. These findings indicate the need for further investigation into the potential of unrefined flaxseed mucilage as a sustainable alternative to synthetic gelling agents and stabilisers in cosmetic formulations.

Silicone-Free Lip Balms: The Impact of Cooling Times and Temperatures on Performance
This study investigated whether targeted modifications to the manufacturing process could enhance the performance of silicone-free lip balms. By strategically adjusting cooling conditions, we sought to replicate the structural and functional qualities traditionally provided by silicones, utilising an ester-based alternative. Physicochemical properties were evaluated through instrumental analyses, comparing silicone-free formulations produced under varied cooling conditions against a multi-domain silicone benchmark. The findings highlight process optimisation as a promising approach for improving silicone-free performance, offering a viable pathway toward more sustainable, high-performance formulations without altering the base composition.

Explorations of consumer relevant testing of textured hair
This project combines consumer hair-related behavioural insights with experimental testing methods specific to textured hair. Qualitative analysis of Subjective Evidence-Based Ethnography (SEBE) data and an online survey revealed that leave-on conditioners were the most commonly used post-wash products, with softness identified as the most valued sensory attribute. Laboratory testing of curl type 4C hair tresses demonstrated that repeated applications of a triolein-containing leave-on product significantly reduced combing work and friction while increasing bending stiffness, reflecting its rheological properties. The findings highlight the importance of tailoring instrumental methods and formulation assessment to the physical and sensorial characteristics of textured hair.

IFSCC 2019 – Bursary Winner

Congratulations to Dilek Guneri from the UCL School of Pharmacy, who won the 2019 SCS Bursary. Dilek won with her paper Humidity-dependent Ex vivo corneocyte maturation and the importance of transglutaminase activity, co-authored by DSM’s Ranieri Voegeli, UCL’s C Zhang, A Bankousli, M Munday and Majella Lane, and Tony Rawlings. The study highlights the impact of relative humidity with special focus on the roles of TG activity in CE maturation. It also suggests that skin care products should consider the negative effect of overhydration and the beneficial impact of proteases into their formulations. Dilek presented her findings at the 2019 IFSCC Conference in Milan, Italy (30 September – 2 October) and the SCS Bursary covered the cost of her travel, accommodation and registration.

IFSCC 2018 – Bursary Winner

Our 2018 winner was Rachael Polowyj who took her paper to the Congress in Berlin, Germany from 18-21 September 2018.

Rachael’s winning paper, Exploring the effect of rheological modifiers and preservatives on the in vitro release of caffeine from gel formulations, was presented as a poster at the Congress. The paper is co-authored by Danka Tamburic and Milica Stevic.

Rachael graduated in 2017 from the London College of Fashion with an MSc in Cosmetic Science and now works with IMCD.

IFSCC 2017 – Bursary Winner

The theme for the 2017 IFSCC Conference in Seoul, Korea was Cosmetic Science: Beauty, Convergence & Creativity.

Congratulations to Dr. Milica Stevic (Post-doctoral Fellow in Cosmetic Science, University of the Arts, London) whose poster Fabrication of personalised lipstick applicator using 3D printing technology won her the 2017 SCS Bursary and helped fund her trip to Seoul.
