This year, by invitation of SCS President Astrid Bodard, we are delighted to welcome Prof. Marc Pissavini, from Coty, (Lancaster, Monaco), to present his lecture :
From Knowing to Understanding: Reflections from a Lifetime in Photoprotection
Synopsis
Using photoprotection as a case study, the lecture will explore how scientific understanding evolves over time, how expertise is built, challenged and transmitted, and why the scientific method remains more important than ever in an age of abundant information and artificial intelligence.
More broadly, it will be a reflection on what the history of photoprotection can teach us about science itself: how knowledge becomes understanding, how certainties evolve, and how progress often comes not from having better answers, but from asking better questions.
Biography
Marc Pissavini is Sun Research Lab Director and Lancaster Researcher at Coty, and Visiting Professor at the University of Montpellier. He is internationally recognised as one of the leading experts in photoprotection science, with nearly three decades of research devoted to sunscreen efficacy, UV exposure, and the development of testing methodologies.
Throughout his career, Marc has played a major role in the advancement and international standardisation of photoprotection testing methods through his leadership within ISO, Cosmetics Europe and CEN. His contributions include the development and validation of widely adopted UVA and in vitro SPF methodologies, helping shape the way sunscreen performance is evaluated across the global cosmetics industry.
Author of more than fifty peer-reviewed scientific publications and contributor to over one hundred international scientific conferences and symposia, Marc’s work spans sunscreen testing, UV exposure modelling, real-life photoprotection, water resistance, product usage behaviour and method development.
In addition to his research activities, he is actively involved in scientific education and knowledge transfer through teaching, editorial activities, international scientific collaborations and the mentoring of young scientists.
