Rules

The Society of Cosmetic Scientists UK & Ireland (SCS) has established the Tony Naylor Memorial Bursary Fund (the Fund) with the objective of encouraging research in cosmetic science and related fields by supporting UK based scientists wishing to present their findings at the annual Congress of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC). Applications for financial support are invited from the first author/presenter of an abstract that has been submitted to the organising committee of the IFSCC Congress for either platform or poster presentations and who fulfils the following criteria:

• Are a current SCS Member.  If you are not already an SCS member you can apply here but your bursary request will not be considered until your membership has been approved
• Are resident in the UK or Ireland and intend to remain so until after the Congress has finished
• For academics and students you must be studying or working in a recognised UK or Ireland based Educational establishment. Online courses, including the SCS Diploma, do not qualify for academic status but you may still apply as an individual SCS Member resident in the UK or Ireland
• For a first author submitting on behalf of small companies (definition of a small company: a company with 5 or less employees) or acting as a consultant, the Company for whom you work must be physically located in the UK or Ireland

Rules Of The Bursary Fund

Applications for financial support must be made by the person concerned using the application form attached.

• All applications will be reviewed by the SCS Funds Committee and all applicants will be informed of the decision of the Committee as soon as reasonably possible.
• Applicants may be asked for additional information to help the Funds Committee reach its decision. The decision of the Committee is final and no further correspondence will be entered into.
• Each application will be judged on its own merits with a view to the scientific importance of the work to be presented and to the necessity for the applicant to receive financial assistance from the Fund. Qualities such as scientific novelty and relevance to the cosmetics industry will be looked for by the Committee, as will the availability of other sources of funding to the applicant.
• The Society is not obliged to fund any applicant if, in the opinion of the the Funds Committee, the scientific work is of insufficient merit or if, in the opinion of the Committee, the applicant should be funded from other sources. The Committee will make void an entry which had been made and funded on three previous occasions within a 7 year period.
• The Committee may decide to offer co-funding of an applicant who has other sources of funding. In such cases, the Committee will state which costs the Fund will cover and the maximum sums the Fund will provide. Neither the Society nor the Committee will be liable in any way should any other source of financial support for the applicant fail to materialise.
• Financial support from the Fund is not intended to cover all of the expenses associated with attendance at the IFSCC congress but may cover major expenditure that would otherwise prevent the applicant from attending. This might include, for example, accommodation to a reasonable standard (eg 3 star hotel), registration, and major travel expenses (e.g. economy class air fares) but would not ordinarily cover incidentals such as local travel costs, meals, or upgraded travel or accommodation costs.
• Applicants are expected to minimise their call on the Fund by, for example, ensuring that discounts are sought wherever possible through early registration and that travel costs are minimised by seeking the lowest reasonable fares.  Reasonable travel costs from the UK only will be reimbursed.
• The Committee will inform the applicant of its decision and will state exactly what expenses the Fund will cover; the response by the Committee may be to set a maximum value on the costs it will cover, either for individual items or for the total. Under no circumstances will the Fund reimburse the applicant for any costs incurred outside of these stated limits.
• Reimbursement of costs incurred by the applicant and not pre-paid by the Society will only be made on production of receipts. It is the responsibility of the applicant to obtain all necessary receipts and present them to the Society when making a claim on the Fund. If the actual receipted spend is less than the maximum figure indicated to the applicant, the difference will not be paid to the applicant but will be retained within the Fund.
• All funding provided by the Society from the Fund is conditional on the applicant attending the relevant congress in person and making the presentation referred to in their application. By accepting financial support from the Fund, the applicant agrees that if they are prevented from making the presentation for any reason whatsoever the applicant will not have any claim on the Fund for any expenses paid or due to be paid by the applicant; and, furthermore, the applicant will repay any and all monies provided by the Society under this agreement including any sums paid by the Society to any third parties for the benefit of the applicant; and, furthermore, the Society will not be liable to meet any costs the applicant may incur as a consequence of their non-participation.
• In respect of Rule 10, the Society strongly encourages the applicant to ensure they are adequately and appropriately insured for any such liabilities, particularly regarding the refunding of monies paid directly from the Fund to third parties such as travel agents, airlines, or the organising committee of the IFSCC congress for the benefit of the applicant.
• All beneficiaries of the Society Fund agree that the liability of the Society shall be limited to the maximum sums defined in the decision given to the applicant by the Committee and that neither the Society nor the Committee nor its members will be liable under any circumstances whatsoever for any other costs, injuries, misfortunes or events as may befall the applicant.
• Successful applicants will be required to be members of the SCS or have applied and been approved for SCS membership prior to the Fund being granted and to write a short article for the Society newsletter describing their experiences during attendance at the IFSCC Congress.
• Applicants should be living or have studied the submitted paper at an institution in the UK.  See criteria above.

Notes:

a) Whilst applications for support for poster presentations are welcomed, in the case of a large number of applications, priority will be given to platform presentations.

b) Again, in the case of a large number of applications, applicants requesting co-funding may be viewed more favourably in order to enable the Society to assist the maximum number of researchers
