Education

A profound belief in the value of education lies at the heart of the Society. Our principal aim is to advance the science of cosmetics, an integral part of which is the provision of information and lifelong learning.

The Society provides a series of training and career development opportunities.

Scrub up on Science (SUOS) is exciting, practical chemistry created for KS3 and KS4 secondary students. It links the UK curricula to the techniques and processes of the cosmetics industry. An annual competition complements the resource. SUOS has impacted the lives of many young people and opened their eyes to a possible career in cosmetic science.

The SCS Introduction to Cosmetic Science course is designed for people who are interested in the fundamentals of cosmetic science but do not have scientific academic qualifications. A self-study, app-based course, it consists of five modules: Skin care, Hair care, Colour Cosmetics, Nail care and Oral care. Modules can be taken individually or in combination.

More career-focused training can be obtained through the SCS Diploma in Cosmetic Science, an industry-recognised course for those with scientific qualifications. A home study course, the Diploma in Cosmetic Science guides students through a comprehensive series of 31 modules, projects, and exams.

There is also our redesigned interactive course for those advancing their careers called the SCS Principles and Practice of Cosmetic Science (PPCS).

In addition, there are educational events held around the country, designed for recent recruits to the industry. The Society’s annual exhibition, SCS Formulate, provides an unmissable opportunity for formulators to learn how to use the newest ingredients, technologies and innovations.

The SCS Diploma in Cosmetic Science and the SCS Principles and Practice of Cosmetic Science courses are approved by the Royal Society of Chemistry for Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
