IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NAGOYA PROTOCOL ON ACCESS AND BENEFIT SHARING
(ABS) IN THE UK

Katie Beckett (ABS Project Manager - Department for Business. Energy and Industrial Strategy)

Synopsis

The Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) is an international instrument which entered into force on 12th October 2014 and is implemented in the UK by Regulation (EU) No. 511/2014 and the UK Statutory Instrument.  Companies and organisations that use genetic resources (plant, animal, microbial material) in their research and development programmes may be required to seek access consent from the country of origin and agree terms on which they use the material.  Regulatory Delivery is responsible for implementing and enforcing ABS legislation in the UK and will provide a brief overview of the obligations for those conducting research and development on genetic resources in the UK, as well as highlight the tools available to support compliance.
